A new national survey released today during the Miami Boat Show finds boat owners report higher levels of satisfaction in marriage and romance than non-boaters. In addition, many key areas of life, including overall well-being, friendship, spirituality, health, work, leisure, sleep and finances, are more likely to be rated “excellent” or “very good” by boat owners than by their non-boat owning counterparts.
The Hubert Johnson Boat and Motor Company was originally founded and started in 1859 by Morton Johnson (1859 to 1930) (Morton Johnson Boat Company). Morton was considered a premier boat builder and was highly respected up and down the Atlantic Coast. His boats were considered “Seaworthy”.
In 1912, at the young age of 18, Hubert Johnson started the Hubert Johnson Boat and Motor Company. Hubert, the son of Morton seemed to be competitive, and maybe he had what he thought to be a “Better Idea”. Hubert opened his new boat yard right next to his father’s yard. Almost sounds like the William Waldorf Aster, and his cousin John Jacob Aster, and the Waldorf Hotel.
Hubert Johnson, was successful, and therefore must have had a “better idea”. Hubert’s boats were custom made and were shipped all over the world. The Mediterranean attracted many of his boats, and the King of Greece had one made for himself.
One of Hubert Johnson’s most successful boats was a 42’ sailboat “The Keel”. Hubert won all the important races. Hubert died in 1949, and his tradition, craftsmanship and quality boat building was carried on by his children until 1969.
Hubert Johnson Company hired a marine architect, David Martin in 1959, who was responsible for designing a sport boat for the new 50’s generation. It now is called “Picnic Boat or Cruiser”. Legally, this boat was a Sportsman, however its trademark design and the black hull, lead to the nickname “Blackjack”.
This Hubert Johnson “Blackjack” is Hull #104. I have been told by the President of the current Hubert Johnson Company, this boat is a custom built Hubert Johnson boat. It is a true “Blackjack”, with unique one of a kind features. It is longer than the regular Blackjack. It is 25’. It is wider. The regular Blackjack was 8’, where Hull #104 is 9 ˝’ in the beam. The dashboard is custom. The regular Blackjacks had a bulkhead with a door under the windshield, which contained a “V” berth and a small head. It was built for children and was so small it was less than useful. Hull #104 is open under the bow which makes it highly useful. The boat has been re-powered with a 220 Crusader with almost new hours. The deck is of a nautalex type material with teak edge and step pads. Lastly the uniqueness of this boat is shown with a custom wooden name plaque containing the Hubert Johnson name and Hull #104
The boat, last year, was completely examined for weak boards, ribs etc. All soft and weak boards have been removed and repaired.

National Survey Indicates Boat Owners Rate Marriage, Romance, Health,
Other Key Areas of Life Satisfaction Higher
MIAMI, February 15, 2001 – Ah, spring. Mating season ensues, especially for boaters and their “first mates.” According to recent findings, the friskiest frolicking couples this season are likely to be boaters.
A new national survey released today during the Miami Boat Show finds boat owners report higher levels of satisfaction in marriage and romance than non-boaters. In addition, many key areas of life, including overall well-being, friendship, spirituality, health, work, leisure, sleep and finances, are more likely to be rated “excellent” or “very good” by boat owners than by their non-boat owning counterparts.
The survey of nearly 1,100 Americans was conducted on-line by Impulse Research Corporation, Los Angeles, and commissioned by the National Marine Manufacturers Association. The survey queried 542 boat owners and 536 non-boat owners.
The survey was conducted by Impulse Research Corporation to develop a better understanding of how boat owners differ from non-boat owners, and if there is a difference in how the two groups assess the quality of their lives. The sampling error is +/- three percent at a 95 percent confidence level.

Boating in the U.S. is a nearly $26 billion industry and is one of the nation’s most popular and fastest growing recreational activities. There are more than 72 million boaters and nearly 17 million registered boats.
